Baggage carriage policy on flights operated by Bulgaria Air

Bulgaria Air airline introduces new rules for carrying baggage for tickets issued after May 2, 2011. The PIECE CONCEPT system is based on the number, weight and dimensions of checked baggage.

 

Free baggage transportation

All Bulgaria Air passengers have the right to transport hand baggage on the board for free and checked baggage (in the baggage department of the aircraft) depending on the selected fare. The free allowances for the number and weight of baggage may be different, depending on the class of travel /business or economy/, as well as the fare on which the ticket was issued. Baggage carriage on scheduled routes is also subject to some general rules and Bulgaria Air policy that you should keep in mind.

 

Fares without a checked baggage

Each passenger who bought a ticket on the HAND BAG fare (includes only hand bag), has the right to carry on board free baggage as follows:

You can request and pay for additional checked baggage:

     • online at the time of booking

     • online after purchasing a ticket - through the Check Booking function on the website or mobile application

     • in an office or Customer Service Center of Bulgaria Air

     • through your travel agency - issuer of the ticket

     • at the airport before the flight (we advise you to pay for the service in advance)

 

When flying from any of the Greek destinations (Athens or Heraklion), checked baggage or excess baggage can only be requested through the ticket issuer or through the Customer Service Center by email at callfb@air.bg.

 

First number of registered luggage up to 23 kg and up to 158 cm*:

    • 30 EUR – Tel Aviv**, London**, Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Amsterdam, Paris

    • 20 EUR – Frankfurt, Berlin, Zurich**, Prague, Vienna, Rome, Milan, Larnaca, Heraklion, Athens, Brussels

    • 15 EUR – for domestic flights

 

Checked baggage can also be purchased at the airport before the flight for:

  • 70 GBP  – for departure from London (LHR)
  • 50 EUR  – for international flights
  • 30 EUR  – for domestic flights

In case of heavier, bulkier or additional checked baggage, the standard conditions of Bulgaria Air apply (see excess baggage table below).

 

The checked baggage surcharge for tickets issued on a fare without checked baggage is non-refundable.

 

Possession of CCB Club cards, Visa Platinum card from CCB, co-branded card from CCB and Bulgaria Air, as well as FLY MORE gold card does not entitle you to free checked baggage at the no-baggage rate.

 

*The sum of the external dimensions of the length, height and width of the luggage /l+h+w/.

**Shipping fee from Tel Aviv is in USD, from Zurich in CHF, from London in GBP.

For flights FB 1452 and FB 1451 on the route Riga - Sofia - Riga, operated by Air Baltic, the following cabin baggage rules apply:

∙ Business class – 2 pcs. cabin baggage up to 8 kg. and dimensions 55/40/20 cm. The sum of the three dimensions (length/height/width) should not exceed 115 cm. A handbag or laptop with dimensions 30/40/10 cm.

∙ Economy class – 1 bg. cabin baggage up to 8 kg. and dimensions 55/40/20 cm. The sum of the three dimensions (length/height/width) should not exceed 115 cm. A handbag or laptop with dimensions 30/40/10 cm.

Tariffs with checked-in baggage

Each passenger who bought a ticket in a tariff that includes checked baggage, is allowed to transport in the luggage compartment of the airplane free baggage allowance as follows:

Infants 0-2 years of age

If the fare of the ticket of the adult who is accompanying the baby allows 1 piece checked baggage up to 23 kg, the baby is entitled to 1 piece checked baggage up to 10 kg.

Transportation of baby carriages is free of charge, but it is mandatory to hand them over/to receive them immediately before embarkation / disembarkation of the aircraft.

The aviation company shall not be responsible for damages resulting from transportation on baggage belts, in case the carriage has not been handed over/received at the aircraft.

* The maximum allowed volume is the sum of the external length, height and width of the baggage/l+h+w/. The passenger may carry more than the free of charge baggage allowance for an additional fee. Third piece is charged as third excess baggage.

** If your tickets are paid in the company's website, as well as in the cases of: possession of gold card FLY MORE, membership in CCB Club, or tickets paid with co-branded card from CCB and Bulgaria Air or Visa Platinum card from CCB you need to contact us by phone +359 2 4020 400 or e-mail callfb@air.bg to reissue the ticket entitled to free 2 pieces of luggage.

*** In order to take advantage of our conditions for the transportation of seamen, the ticket must be issued at a special seaman fare. Possession of card CCB Club, Visa Platinum CCB, co-branded card from CCB and Bulgaria Air, and Gold Card FLY MORE does not entitle the additional free checked baggage on tariff without luggage.

The right to two pieces of luggage for holders of Gold Card FLY MORE and CCB Club and tickets paid with co-branded card CCB and Bulgaria Air and Visa Platinum card from CCB is only on flights where the operating carrier is Bulgaria Air.

For flights FB 1452 and FB 1451 on the route Riga - Sofia - Riga, operated by Air Baltic, the following checked baggage rules apply:

∙ Business class – 2 pcs. baggage with a total weight of up to 46 kg. + 1 pc. sports equipment with a maximum weight of 20 kg.

∙ Economy class - 1 pc. checked baggage up to 23 kg.

Baggage with weight over 32 kg may only be carried as cargo.

In case the ticket entitles a free carriage of 2 pieces of checked baggage and the passenger carries 3 pieces of checked baggage - the third luggage is in the category " Extra piece – third bag up to 23 kg up to 158 cm".

Special categories of baggage

Sport equipment    

  1. Sports equipment

The sports equipment can have a maximum size of up to 23 kg and up to 280 cm.

Ski, snowboard and golf equipment can be declared and payed either during the online reservation process or after the ticket purchase – through “Check reservation” option.

Fees:

60 EUR one-way for the destinations – Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Tel Aviv*, Amsterdam, Paris, London*

50 EUR one-way to all other international destinations

30 EUR for domestic flights

Passengers with fares allowing checked baggage can carry 1 set of ski or snowboard equipment instead of 1 standard checked baggage.

The bag/case with the equipment can have a total size of up to 280 cm (length+height+width) and a weight of up to 23 kg.

If the gear is in addition to checked baggage, standard charges apply.

The equipment set can only contain: one pair of skis/snowboard, one pair of poles and one pair of ski boots. Otherwise the registration may be refused.

At some airports, the registration of sports equipment is performed at a specially designated place and takes more time.

Bicycles

    2.Bicycles аre accepted for transport only packed (in a cardboard or a special case).

Maximum sizes of the package 160 x 90 x 25 cm.

Prior confirmation of the service is required in the reservation.

The service should be requested and paid for in advance. Otherwise, it would be denied at the airport.

Firearms

The transportation of firearms and ammunition is carried out according to the requirements of the International Air Transport Association /IATA/.

 

Weapons are permitted for transport only on flights, operated by Bulgaria Air.

 

The transport of weapons cannot be confirmed in cases when Bulgaria Air airline is a partner in a flight.

 

If the service is not requested and paid for in advance, transport of weapons may be refused by the airport.

 

Only sporting weapons and ammunition are transported. Transportation of other firearms and ammunition is prohibited.

 

In some cases, the carriage of firearms and ammunition for hunting purposes may be permitted. The passenger must contact Bulgaria Air and provide information about the type of weapon, its serial number and ammunition being imported into the reservation system. All firearms and ammunition are only accepted as carry-on baggage in the baggage compartment of the aircraft and in no case in the cabin with passengers. They must be separately and appropriately packed, and the weight of the ammunition must not exceed 5 kg.

The passenger must have all documents required by law and regulations applicable to carriage for the country concerned.

Bulgaria Air reserves the right to refuse carriage of firearms and ammunition.

 

For the permitted sporting weapons, fees are applied as follows:

 

• Hunting rifles and cartridges – set up to 15 kg.   

  • Fee 60 EUR – Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Tel Aviv*, Amsterdam, Paris, London*    

• Fee 50 EUR – for all other international lines   

  • Fee 30 EUR – for internal lines  

   • Hunting rifles and cartridges – with a total weight of more than 15 kg.   

  • Fee 80 EUR – Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Tel Aviv*, Amsterdam, Paris, London*    

• Fee 70 EUR – for all other international destinations*    

• Fee 50 EUR – for internal lines

*Shipping fee from Tel Aviv is in USD, from Zurich in CHF, from London in GBP.

 

The shotgun and the cartridges are considered as one piece of checked luggage and are charged with one-time fee for service. This type of luggage is not included in the free norm and fee is charged no matter whether the passenger has another checked-in luggage.

Pets in the passenger cabin /PETC/ 

Pets in the passenger cabin (dog or cat*) can be transported with a maximum total weight of the animal and the cage up to 8kg.**

Maximum dimensions of the cage - 48 x 35 x 22 cm.**, and it cannot be included in the passenger's free baggage allowance.   

  • Fee 80 EUR – Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Tel Aviv***, Amsterdam, Paris  

  • Fee 70 EUR – for all other international destinations***    

• Fee 50 EUR – domestic flights

When requested and paid at the airport, the price of the service is 90 EUR for international flights and 60 EUR for domestic flights.

Bulgaria Air reserves the right to refuse boarding when the pet quota is exceeded, therefore we recommend that the service be requested and paid for in advance. Passengers who wish to use the service must familiarize themselves with the instructions for the carriage of pets in advance and comply with all conditions of Regulation 576/2013.

** The service is available only for direct flights operated by the airline.

**** Bulgaria Air does not accept animals for transport to/from Great Britain.

Pets in the hold /AVIH/

Pets (dog or cat*) may be transported in the baggage compartment of the aircraft without a weight limit for the animal.

Maximum dimensions of the cage - 110 x 65 x 70 cm, and it cannot be included in the passenger's free baggage allowance.

The fees for the services are as follows:

           • with a weight of the animal and the container of 9-23 kg

    • Fee 110 EUR - Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Tel Aviv**, Amsterdam, Paris

    • Fee 100 EUR – for all other international destinations**

    • Fee 70 EUR – for internal lines

 

             • when the weight of the animal and the container of 23 - 45 kg

    • Fee 150 EUR - Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Tel Aviv**, Amsterdam, Paris

    • Fee 140 EUR – for all other international destinations**

    • Fee 90 EUR – for internal lines

          • when the weight of the animal and the container exceeds 45 kg

    • Fee 190 EUR - Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Tel Aviv**, Amsterdam, Paris

    • Fee 170 EUR – for all other international destinations**

    • Fee 110 EUR – for internal lines

If the service is not requested and paid for in advance, transport of pets in hold will be refused at  the airport.

Bulgaria Air remains its right to refuse transport in the luggage compartment when the pet quota is exceeded.

EXCEPTIONS:

*Only dogs and cats are accepted.

** Shipping fee from Tel Aviv is in USD, from Zurich in CHF.

*** Bulgaria air does not accept transporting animals to and from Great Britain.

**** Animals with container weight of over 25 kg are not accepted for a transport to/from Brussels.

*****Fighting and dangerous breeds are accepted for carriage as cargo only (eg American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, Dogo Argentino, Kangal, Anatolian Shepherd, Caucasian Shepherd, Rottweiler, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Doberman, Cane Corso, etc.).

 

Conditions for the carriage of animals in the baggage compartment of the aircraft

 

    • The transport container must be large enough for the animal to stand in its natural position, to be able to turn and lie down;

    • The transport container must be designed so that liquids do not leak, e.g. lined with absorbent material such as a blanket;

    • The container must be resistant to exit attempts. Strong plastic or wooden containers made of harmless and non-toxic material are recommended. Wire mesh cages are not permitted;

    • To avoid injury to the animal, the inside of the container must not have sharp corners, edges or nails;

    • Shipping containers must have ventilation openings on all four sides.

 

Passengers who wish to travel with a pet (dog or cat) must first familiarize themselves with the instructions for the carriage of pets and comply with all the conditions of Regulation 576/2013.

Products of animal origin

The import of products of animal origin to the European Union is subject to strict procedures for veterinary and sanitation control. Due to the risk of introducing diseases to the European Union via products of animal origin containing pathogens and causing infectious diseases in animals, the import to the European Union of meat, meat products, milk and dairy products for personal consumption is prohibited. 

Exceptions are allowed for the following categories of products:

  • Powdered infant milk, infant food and special foods required for medical reasons, under the conditions that these products are packaged patented brand products, they do not require refrigeration before opening, and that the packaging is unbroken.
  • Meat and meat products and milk and dairy products for personal consumption from the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, in so far as their total weight is less than 5 kg.
  • Meat and meat products and milk and dairy products for personal consumption from Andorra, Norway and San Marino.

Other quantities of meat and meat products and milk and dairy products may be imported by passengers to the Community only if they:

  • Hold the required documents issued by the official veterinary and sanitation authorities of the state of origin, confirming the goods comply to the requirements for import to the European Union.
  • Declare all such goods and submit the documents upon arrival to an authorized border veterinary control point of the EU.

Meat and meat products and milk and dairy products that do not comply to these rules should be delivered upon arrival at the border for disposal ex officio.

The failure to declare such products may result in imposition of a fine or criminal charges.

Passengers are entitled to import foods of animal origin other than: meat and meat products and milk and dairy products of weight up to 1 kg, with no requirement for delivery for inspection.

*The maximum allowed volume is the sum of the external length, height and width of the baggage /l+h+w/.

**The amounts paid for the specified services are non-refundable.

**Instructions for pets transportation

Damaged baggage

In case of damaged baggage or partial loss of the contents of the baggage you must report upon your arrival to the ‘Baggage Claim’ department at the respective airport and before passing the customs control, where a Damage Report will be prepared.

For the purpose of clarification, the procedure for repair of your damaged baggage requires you to submit a written inquiry by mail to the airline (Bulgaria Air,Complaints and Claims Department,1 Brussels Blvd. Sofia 1540 Bulgaria) or by the complaints and complaints platform. You need to submit a scanned Damage report, within 7 days of issuance of the Damager report.

Claims must be accompanied by the following original / scanned documents:

  • Damage Report;
  • Statement on impossibility of repairs;
  • Boarding pass(es);
  • Baggage tag(s);
  • Bank account / IBAN / SWIFT CODE;
  • Claim.

For partner flights involving Bulgaria Air and other partner airlines, other luggage conditions may apply.

Delayed/lost baggage

In case of delayed / lost baggage you must report upon your arrival to the ‘Baggage Claim’ department at the respective airport and before passing the customs control, where a Property Irregularity Report – PIR will be prepared.

You are kindly requested to send your WRITTEN CLAIM accompanied by the required original documents by registered mail with return receipt to the address shown herein below or to the e-mail: lf@air.bg within 21 of issuance of the Property Irregularity Report - PIR.

Claims must be accompanied by the following original documents:

  • Property Irregularity Report - PIR;
  • Boarding passes;
  • Baggage tag(s);
  • Receipt for excess baggage fee paid (if any);
  • Bank account / IBAN / SWIFT CODE;
  • Claim.
